New York City is bracing for a very busy 4th of July weekend as World Cup matches mix with huge Independence Day celebrations for America's 250th anniversary and apparently popstar Taylor Swift's wedding to football player Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden. Information has been leaking out, with reports of a rehearsal dinner followed by a larger celebration in front of 1,000 people. The big event also coincides with a massive heatwave that has prompted city officials to declare a heat emergency.

Campings ontruimd om bosbranden Zuid-Frankrijk, 1000 mensen geëvacueerd

Door de grote bosbranden die woeden in Zuid-Frankrijk zijn meerdere campings ontruimd. De campings liggen onder meer in Canet-en-Roussillon, een gemeente en badplaats in het Franse departement Pyrénées-Orientale. Volgens Franse media zijn meer dan duizend mensen geëvacueerd. Vanwege de branden in het zuiden van het land heeft de Franse regering inmiddels een crisisteam samengesteld, geleid door premier Lecornu. Het lokale bestuur schrijft op sociale media dat het grote campingcomplex Le Brasilia en de camping Homair-La Marina de Canet zijn ontruimd. Datzelfde geldt voor een camping in buurgemeente Sainte-Marie-de-la-Mer. Er zijn geen gewonden gevallen, aldus de hoogste lokale bestuurder van Pyrénées-Orientales. Wel noemt hij de situatie zeer ongunstig. De sterke wind stuurt het vuur volgens hem in zuidoostelijke richting, naar het havengebied. Een ooggetuige noemt de situatie tegen de Franse nieuwssite Actu "apocalyptisch". De rookpluimen zijn kilometers ver te zien. De gemeente roept de bevolking op om gedurende de branden niet naar het strand te gaan om te zwemmen. "De reddingsposten zijn tijdelijk gesloten om alle teams in te zetten voor de bestrijding van de brand. We raden u dringend aan niet te zwemmen." De luchthaven van de nabijgelegen stad Perpignan heeft vanwege de branden meerdere vluchten geannuleerd. Er is groot materieel ingezet om de branden te blussen, waaronder blusvliegtuigen. Lokale media schrijven dat daarnaast 215 brandweerlieden en 25 blusvoertuigen actief zijn. Voor de twee campings in Canet-en-Roussillon is dat mogelijk te laat, het stadsbestuur zegt dat die "zwaar getroffen" zijn. Mensen worden opgeroepen om afstand te houden en de hulplijnen niet onnodig te belasten. De autoriteiten van Canet-en-Roussillon roepen iedereen dan ook op om "de grootste waakzaamheid te betrachten". Ook in de departementen Hérault en Aude woeden grote natuurbranden waarbij al zeker 1000 hectare natuurgebied is verwoest.

Govt decides to extend Murree Expressway by 70km to Muzaffarabad

ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday decided to extend the Murree Expressway by 70 kilometres to Muzaffarabad during a National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting chaired by Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan. Work on the road has been ongoing under Khan’s tenure, including when he visited the expressway last November to review beautification, rehabilitation and improvement works along the route. According to the communications ministry, Khan presided over the meeting to review the authority’s financial close and map out strategic infrastructure priorities for the current fiscal year. In a decision aimed at boosting regional connectivity, the minister announced a 70km extension of the Murree Expressway (N-75) to Muzaffarabad. The expansion will effectively connect Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to Pakistan’s main motorway and expressway network, providing residents with a modern, high-speed and safer travel facility. The minister said the extension marked the beginning of a modern era of safe transit for the people of AJK, adding that they deserved the same “high-calibre” motorway facilities available across the rest of the country. To ensure maximum efficiency across the board, he issued directives to the NHA leadership to prioritise the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects over launching new ones. He said that during the current fiscal year, the NHA must focus its resources on completing 25 priority projects before shifting attention to new initiatives. Among these, Khan emphasised the completion of the M-8 Motorway, directing that the Hoshab–Awaran Road and the Awaran–Nal project be fast-tracked. He said these southwestern corridors were important for expanding trade with neighbouring Iran as well as for unlocking the tourism potential of the region. Reviewing the NHA’s long-term financial health, Khan also outlined a bold vision to transform the authority to ensure self-reliance. He said the NHA will be restructured to generate up to Rs400 billion annually from its own internal revenue streams, rather than relying on federal government funding. The meeting concluded after detailed briefings by the Secretary for Communications and the chairman of the NHA on the organisation’s fiscal closeout and strategic operational roadmap. The road has witnessed several accidents, including one earlier this month in which at least 10 people were killed and 13 others injured when a van caught fire after falling into a nullah while taking a turn, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) said.
